A nurture course provides an opportunity for those who are not yet Christian to come together with those who are and explore the Christian faith. In today’s culture there are many people who want to find out about the Christian faith but we are not yet ready to commit. Putting on a nurture course can be the best way of helping them. The most widely used course is Alpha, but there are several others, including the new course, Pilgrim. Bishop Stephen is one of the authors and the course has been piloted in the Diocese of Chelmsford.
The Alpha course is a course which seeks to explore the basics of the Christian faith, described by its organisers as "an opportunity to explore the meaning of life". Alpha courses are currently being run in churches, homes, workplaces, prisons, universities and a wide variety of other locations.
Written by Stephen Cottrell, Steven Croft, Paula Gooder and Robert Atwell, with contributions from a wide range of Anglican figures, Pilgrim explores the Christian faith through Bible reading, prayer, discussion and reflection.
Emmaus course is a friendly, informal, course over 15 sessions with the suggestion of a guest evening and meal together at the end. Each session is self-contained and is designed to fit into a single evening and is an interesting way to learn more about what Christians believe.
Start! is a basic six-session introduction to the Christian faith for use in small groups.
Christianity Explored is an independent UK Charity which originated in All Souls Church, London and produce courses and other materials to help people understand from the Bible who Jesus is, why he came, and what it means to follow him.

Making Connections…Evangelising effectively in Chelmsford Diocese
What is evangelism? And how can we enable it to happen through the local church?
This publication begins to set out some of the issues and opportunities that can help us evangelise effectively, and in ways that suit our different circumstances.
Making Connections has been produced as a long term resource for the Diocese of Chelmsford.
Bishop Stephen’s recipe for evangelism is available for you to download or you can order your printed recipe card from our Bookshop.
Take one church. Stir vigorously. But make sure the ingredients do not separate. For this you will need leaders who share responsibility and encourage others to use their gifts, and a laity who want to be part of God’s mission. But there will never be any evangelism unless it flows from a lived relationship with God.
